Additional Information for Application
Walter S. "Speedy" Travis Memorial Scholarship

Speedy Travis served nearly 30 years as the State Adjutant of the American Legion.  He aggressively promoted many programs, some of which he personally initiated, in support of South Dakota’s young people.

An eminent journalist in his own right, his early assignments included ongoing progress reports on the carving of Mt. Rushmore, host reporter at Pres. Coolidge's summer White House in the Black Hills, and Associated Press correspondent at our nation's first venture into space.  A lobbyist extraordinaire, Mr. Travis is the only person who---by official statute---has a dedicated chair placed permanently in the state capitol in Pierre.

This scholarship shall be offered to one member of Journalism City at the close of each session of South Dakota Legion Auxiliary Girls State and shall be used by the recipient at a college or university of her choice, for the express use of furthering her education in the field of Journalism.
